WFH 101: Setting up a home office

So, you're working from home! Whether you're starting your own business (like a franchise) or finally convinced your boss to let you work from home, there are steps you can take to optimize your workspace. Our tips for setting up your home office below can help you maximize productivity.

Choosing a dedicated workspace.

The first step in setting up your home office is finding a dedicated workspace around your home. While a spare room is ideal, not everyone has the space. Choose a quiet area around the house to minimize distractions so you can focus on your work. You’ll also want to ensure the area will have enough space for any storage you may need.

Get sufficient lighting

If possible, try to get a space that has natural lighting. Natural lighting has many documented benefits that can help you get the most out of your workspace. According to the North Carolina State University, Natural light boosts your body’s vitamin D production, leads to higher productivity, benefits your vision, and helps improve your mood. Tiny considerations like this could lead to a large increase in productivity in your everyday life. A well-lit area is essential to ensure your workspace is functional even without natural lighting.

Get the right internet

In 2024, it is nearly impossible to do business without the internet. At Summit Building Services, we utilize the internet and several systems to create our tech stack. It’s essential to our operations, so we must have a stable internet connection. High-speed internet can make any work you may need to do easier.

Setting up necessary equipment and furniture

Most importantly, you’ll need a computer. Laptops are a great choice, allowing for work on the go as needed. Aside from a personal computer, consider what things you could invest to improve your productivity. A computer desk, an extra monitor, and a printer may also be utilized to make yourself more productive, though whether the gains in productivity will be worth your investment should be considered, especially if you're just starting your business.

Using storage solutions

When setting up your home office, considering storage systems in advance can save a headache later. A file cabinet will help you organize where different documents should be stored and help your home office stay organized to achieve peace of mind. Shelves can keep the items that you need in an area with ease of access. Even little things, like a cup for pens, can help make a difference in utilizing your space.
